Conference Theme

“HRD Research: Gateway to New Frontiers”

St. Louis, Missouri is home to the internationally renowned Gateway Arch. The Gateway Arch is a monument that recognizes the pioneering spirit of those who ventured into the Western part of the United States in the early-1800’s. In the shadow of the Gateway Arch, conference participants will come together to engage in their own discovery and exploration of the frontiers of HRD.

Frontiers are the “outer limits in a field or endeavor, especially one in which the opportunities for research and development have not been exploited” ( Frontiers offer us the opportunity to move beyond traditional constraints and towards creativity and generativity. They beckon for pioneers to venture into the unknown to open up new areas of thought, research, and development.

Conference submissions that are aligned with this theme will contribute to the shared expedition of HRD scholarship and practice and will explore unchartered areas in need of research/theorizing, unanswered questions, and unaddressed opportunities and challenges. Submissions that are spotlighted as highly relevant to this year’s conference theme will pull us towards conversations and scholarship that are important for the territories that lie beyond and/or ahead as related to workplace and organizational learning, performance, and change. And, in doing so, help us to envision greater things.

The New Frontier of Workplace Learning

Current workplace learning methodologies are quickly becoming out of date—quickly moving far beyond creating, delivering, and managing e-learning. In her keynote, Jane will show from her own research how the way we learn at work is fundamentally changing, in large part influenced by the Web and social learning, and how organizations at the leading edge are modernizing and innovating their approaches to workplace learning.

Graduate Student Research Colloquium Announcement

(previouly titled Emerging Research Course)

We are very excited to announce the offering of a Graduate Student Research Colloquium (previously titled Emerging Research Course), at the AHRD 2015 Conference in the Americas.  The colloquium’s programs were substantially revised thanks to the constructive feedback received from over 90 responses to the Scholar Professional Development Survey, and the valuable input from the Board of AHRD. Highlights below are some new features in the 2015 conference course.

  • Separate programming will be offered to master’s students and advanced doctoral students to address their distinctive needs.
    • The master’s colloquium, focusing on promoting evidence-based practice and developing an identity as Scholar-Practitioner, will include four topics: Overview of Research Paradigm; Evaluating and Critiquing Research; Journey of HRD Scholarly Practitioners;and Research-to-Practice. It will offer an opportunity to explore the means to incorporate research into practice and to build a professional identity as a scholarly practitioner.
    • The doctoral colloquium, focusing on preparing for scholarship and professorship, will consists of four sections:  Research Symposium, Developing a Scholarly Identity, Planning for a Scholarly Career, and Scholarly Writing Studio. This colloquium will provide a venue for sharing research work, and will explore the path to establish a scholarly identity and an academic career.
  • The colloquium will use a 1.5-day format to maximize interactions and collective learning among facilitators, students, scholars and practitioners. The class will start on Wednesday 9:00am (Feb. 18, 2015) and end at Thursday noon (Feb. 19, 2015).
  • At the end of the conference, a Learning Reflection Session will be held by the colloquium coordinators. This session will serve as a forum for all the student participants to share their learning takeaways and conference experiences, and suggest areas for future improvement.
  • Finally, for the first time, SIGs will participate in the design and delivery of the colloquium’s programs.

The syllabus is now available here. If you are a student interested in registering for the colloquium, please contact your sponsoring instructor at your institution. If you are faculty interested in facilitating this colloquium, please contact the two coordinators:  Dr. Jia Wang ( and/or Dr. Tomika Greer (
We look forward to your participation!
