Hi Everyone,

As VP of International Conferences and Webinars, I have a lot of information to share! There are two International conferences coming up (The International Joint Conferences of the 11th International Conference of the Asia Chapter and the 2nd Conference of the MENA Chapter of Academy of Human Resource Development, and the 10th International Conference on Knowledge, Economy and Management to be held in Istanbul, Turkey) that offer exciting opportunities for learning, networking, and development.

The joint conference between the Asian and the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) chapters will be held November 8-10 with a pre-conference scheduled for November 7. The manuscript submission deadline has been extended to August 1, 2012. However, the early bird registration deadline is July 12, 2012. Manuscripts submitted by June 1 will be reviewed and returned with feedback in plenty of time for the early bird registration. An online submission platform is available to submit your papers. More information about the conference, manuscript submission, and conference site is available at: There are a number of tracks and topics to submit your manuscripts/abstracts.


In August, Dr. Laird McLean will present Understanding Creativity in Organizations: The Relationships Among Cross-level Variables and Creativity in Research and Development Organizations. He received AHRD's dissertation of the year award. For the October webcast, Drs. Brad Shuck, Thomas G. Reio, Jr., and Karen Kelly Wollard will present Employee Engagement HRD: Linking Theory and Scholarship to Practice Issue. This paper received the 2011 Advances in Developing Human Resources Outstanding Issue Award. The last webcast of the year will be presented by Drs. Tomozumi Nakamura and Lyle Yorks, and their presentation isThe Role of Reflective Practices in Building Social Capital in Organizations from an HRD Perspective. They are the recipients of the 2011 Elwood F. Holton, III, Research Excellence Award.


More information about the time and dates of the upcoming webcasts will be announced in upcoming months. These webcasts are free for AHRD members, and nonmembers may attend for $25.

Faculty Learning and Development SIG

The Faculty Learning and Development SIG was founded to provide opportunities for scholars (at all career stages) to engage in discussion, research, and resource-sharing on issues of faculty development. Topics may include, but are not limited to, instructional methodology and strategies, curriculum development and assessment, faculty career development issues, research and publishing skills, grant writing and development, classroom management, departmental or program leadership, and scholar research and development. As a SIG we endeavor to accomplish several objectives to further scholar learning and development.


Our Objectives:

  • Support and promote research and practice that support effective scholar teaching, development, leadership, and research;
  • Encourage publications (journals, conference proceedings, articles, webinars) related to scholar learning and development;
  • Sponsor opportunities to foster engagement, dialogue, and collaborative research and development opportunities for faculty at all levels of an educational setting;
  • Sponsor conference events related to Faculty Learning and Development issues;
  • Support related conference tracks with papers, abstracts, and reviewers with an interest in scholar learning and development issues; and
  • Sponsor conference activities (e.g., food-n-thought sessions, innovative sessions, pre-conference events) on scholar learning and development issues.

  • Develop a stronger mentoring/web/support presence -Jeff Allen is leading the charge to strengthen our web profile and resources to support faculty development. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn page, Facebook, and the AHRD website for updates.
  • Conference Innovative Session -Back by popular demand, the FLC SIG will host another innovative session aimed at improving teaching and learning. Jamie Callahan is in charge of this year's festivities.
  • Conference Juried FLD Symposium -Watch for an upcoming call for symposia proposals focused on faculty learning and development. Laura Bierema, Jamie Callahan, Linda Hite, and Holly Hutchins will coordinate this session.
  • Conference Food-N-Thought Session -Emily Morrision and Katie Rosenbusch will be coordinating this year's session.
  • Conference Early Career Workshop -Back by popular demand, Holly Hutchins and Laura Bierema will again co-facilitate a special session to address early career issues for new faculty. Promotional information will come out closer to the conference.

Utilizing Pinterest as a Learning Tool

HRD scholars and practitioners are bombarded with the challenge to stay relevant in an ever-changing workplace. One way to keep current is by frequently perusing web content for new and interesting ideas, including news articles, blogs, and social media. A new method to easily share or save useful web content is by pinning it on Pinterest.


Pinterest ( launched in 2010 and was recently ranked third-most-used social media behind Facebook and Twitter. Originally dominated for home use, such as saving recipes and home décor tips, its utility now extends to professional use because of the ease of saving and sharing web-linked images. Essentially, Pinterest is a social bookmarking tool. Users have a main board where they can either use pre-made categories (pinboards) or customize categories for their pins. A pin is a digital object such as image or video (either from a website or uploaded by the user). Like other social networks, users can collaborate by following other users, sharing content, tagging objects, and commenting.


Instructors might consider utilizing Pinterest as a learning tool that can also create community in online courses. For example, students could be asked to locate course-related content or current news events on the web and then pin links to a class-wide pinboard, thus increasing informal learning opportunities. Practitioners might find it beneficial for such activities as product and service research.

Pinterest is free to users but an account is required. To join, you need an invitation from a friend or you can visit and click Request an invite and enter your email address. Pinterest requires Facebook or Twitter to create a new account. However, you can easily unlink from your Facebook/Twitter account and log in with your email address instead. Pinterest apps are currently available for mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone, with other mobile access through The power of the pin is becoming increasingly useful for integrated learning and productivity.back to top

PEN - HRD Directory of U.S. Programs

The Program Excellence Network (PEN) is committed to strengthening HRD academic programs and promoting excellence in teaching HRD. The 2011 Human Resource Development Directory of Academic Programs in the United States marks the fourth year of publication. The purpose of this research project is to identify all programs preparing HRD professionals in the United States, to obtain basic descriptive information on each program, and to assemble the information into a useful directory for dissemination to the profession.

The directory is distributed through both paper and electronic means. A physical copy is given to each attendee of the AHRD International Conference in the Americas. A pdf version of the directory is also posted in the directory website ( where it can be downloaded and printed.

Member Spotlight

Rachelle LehnerRachelle Lehner

Rachelle Lehner, Assistant Dean for Staff Development at Emory University School of Medicine, is this month's spotlight member. She has been a member since 2003. In the last nine years Rachelle has been an AHRD conference presenter, reviewer, and symposium chair. Her volunteerism includes assisting with Scholar Practitioner Preconferences, publishing in Advances, and supporting and engaging new members.


The most memorable AHRD experience for Rachelle was at the conference in Austin. She was a doctoral student at the University of Georgia and it was her first time presenting at the conference. It was an interactive session and Gary McLean was sitting in the front row. During introductions Gary introduced himself by challenging the very concept she was presenting. She describes the experience as both a challenge and intimidating, but one that ended well and made her a stronger presenter. She also noted that the time she spends with her Scholar Practitioner friends is priceless - calling it a welcomed opportunity for socializing and learning.

Rachelle is currently reading the novel, Perfect Peace by Daniel Black, as well as Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Protégés Get the Most Out of Their Relationships by Ellen Ensher and Susan Murphy.

Keys to Building & Sustaining Ethical Business Cultures: Survey Development and Validation of the Ethical Business Culture Construct

The global financial crisis of the 2000s was accompanied by a series of ethical breakdowns within business institutions. This surprised many business practitioners, academics, and legislators, who believed measures taken after earlier spectacular scandals would mitigate re-occurrence of the abuse and misconduct. Does this revelation suggest that measures taken failed to provide reliable protection against major ethics violations? Were the measures appropriate, were they targeting the right set of issues and problems? We argue that creating formal codes of ethics and conducting ethics training is necessary, but insufficient: Ethical behavior is promoted and facilitated by an ethical business culture. To develop and support ethical business cultures in organizations, HRD practitioners need to be able to utilize quantitative benchmarks for measuring the initial parameters and later progress of their efforts. Therefore, the creation of reliable instruments for measuring organizational ethical culture is both practically and theoretically important. In our discussion, we will report on the creation of the ethical business culture construct consisting of five uniquely quantifiable characteristics and their measurement using the Ethical Business Culture Survey instrument.

  • Nominations for the Qualitative Inquiry Steering Committee are being held open through the end of June. Please contact Kori Whitener Fellows if you would like to be more involved in AHRD and the QI SIG.
  • The Qualitative Inquiry SIG asks you to consider submitting a proposal for the 2013 AHRD Conference in Washington, DC. The call will go out next month for papers/presentations focusing on the theme: Pearls and Perils of Conducing Qualitative Inquiry. Contact any QI steering committee member for details.

    The conference will be held February 13-17 in Arlington, VA (DC Metro) and is a great opportunity to share your research, innovation, and ideas with colleagues and peers. Complete information is available on the AHRD website.

    The 2013 Conference team has had a busy summer working on the 20th Anniversary Celebration Conference, and is pleased to announce that the Call for Papers is now available. Please note a couple very important changes to the Call from previous years. First, the deadline for submissions is firm—there will be no extensions to the posted date. Second, there is a new submission category: we are pleased to introduce two types of symposia to add more richness to the scholarly conference. The two types of symposia are 1) panel symposia; and 2) paper symposia. You can find out more information within the CFP (Call for Papers) or email the conference team.

    We will announce other enhancements to the conference in the near future. In the meantime, be sure to work on your papers, abstracts, or posters! We will announce the conference website information very shortly for your submissions.
