President-elect Candidate Bio & Statement
AHRD has been an academic professional home for my entire career. In fact, as a curious doctoral student, I attended the 1993 ASTD (now ATD) Professors’ meeting in Atlanta where members decided to create AHRD. During the past 25 years of AHRD’s history, I have attended all but one conference, served twice on the board, introduced students to the organization, run the Graduate Student Colloquium, chaired the Faculty Learning and Development SIG, belonged to the Critical HRD & Social Justice Perspectives and Workforce Diversity and Inclusion SIGs, chaired PEN, served on the AHRD Foundation Board, and participated actively in conferences as a volunteer, preconference organizer, and presenter. It has been a great privilege to mentor students and faculty, and humbling to have the Excellence in Critical HRD Award named in my honor.
My vision for AHRD is to build on the excellent leadership in place to advance our commitment to Leading Human Resource Development Through Research. Mindful that AHRD turns 25 this year, my pledge is to position the AHRD for the next 25 years. What does that look like? Ensuring our members are receiving high value. Recruiting new members who are passionate about research that serves both theory and practice. Continuing and extending our international partnerships. Growing the AHRD Foundation to support the research of our members and vitality of AHRD.
Dr. Bierema is professor of Adult Learning, Leadership, and Organization Development at the University of Georgia and author of multiple books and articles related to HRD.
Board Candidate Bios & Statements
I am an Associate Professor of Human Resource Development (HRD) in the Department of Technology Leadership & Innovation at Purdue University-West Lafayette. I founded the HRD undergraduate program at Purdue University, and I established Purdue Polytechnic Leadership Academy to help STEM students develop leadership competencies. My research focuses on developing intercultural leadership competencies through immersive learning technologies including augmented and virtual reality, human capital analytics, and biometric data application in HRD research. I am currently serving as the director of HRD Virtual Lab as well as HRD Analytics Lab at Purdue University. I received over $1M in funded research. My work has been published in HRD, HRM, management, education, and technology journals. I have been a member of AHRD since 2002 and have served in several roles including AHRD Board and PEN membership, AHRD Asia Conference coordinator, editorial boards of all AHRD journals, international and diversity SIG chairs, conference track chair and reviewer, among others. I am also a recipient of AHRD Early Career Scholar Award.
AHRD is my academic and disciplinary home and I am very committed to its mission. Specifically, I plan to continue to support AHRD’s global impact on bridging between research and practice by addressing Grand Challenges through development of human and organizational expertise at multiple levels. Similarly, technology is a critical force that continues to impact our research and practice. I hope to support AHRD in building an institutional capacity to systematically explore technology implications for future work and learning, and engage in policy development.
Dr. Tomika Greer is Associate Instructional Professor of Human Resource Development (HRD) and HRD Internships Coordinator at the University of Houston. Prior to earning a PhD in HRD from Texas A&M University in 2011, Tomika worked for 10 years as a training and development professional in several organizations. After being introduced to AHRD through the Emerging Scholars Research Course in 2009, Tomika has maintained continuous membership and served AHRD in a variety of roles. Most notably, she has served as a Conference Reviewer (2010-present), Track Chair Editor (2012-13), Faculty Facilitator for the Emerging Scholars Pre-conference Course (2012-14), Co-Coordinator of the Graduate Student Colloquium (2015), Co-Coordinator of the Scholar-Practitioner Professional Development Workshop (2016-17), and member of three AHRD Awards selection committees (2015-present). She has published in the AHRD journals, is a member of the editorial board for Human Resource Development Review (HRDR), and recently co-edited the May 2017 issue of Advances in Developing Human Resources (ADHR).
In pursuing election to the AHRD Board, Tomika desires to build upon current efforts by strengthening connections between practice and research. She is committed to practical implementation of valid research and will support and lead initiatives to build fruitful partnerships between HRD professionals outside and inside academia. Tomika is also committed to ensuring the long-term vitality of AHRD. To best position AHRD as a thriving organization into the future, Tomika will support and lead initiatives that contribute to building a diverse pipeline of fledgling and emerging HRD professionals who will serve and eventually lead AHRD.
Sarah E. Minnis, PhD is an experienced HRD scholar-practitioner with more than a decade spent addressing veterans’ career transition needs through published research and career development. Sarah is a lecturer for Texas A&M University’s Educational Administration and Human Resource Development program as well as doctoral advisor with Grand Canyon University. Sarah earned her Doctorate in Educational Human Resource Development from Texas A&M University, her master’s degree in Student Affairs from Western Kentucky University, and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Central Washington University. Sarah was the second runner-up for the 2015 AHRD Esworthy Malcolm S. Knowles Dissertation of the Year Award.
I knew that the Academy of Human Resource Development was my professional home at my first conference. There, I found like minds engaged in academic dialog based on experiences in learning organizations and those interested in collaborating on innovative research. My vision, if elected to the AHRD board, is to continue fostering the rich environment of scholarship dedicated to the advancement of learning in organizations. As organizational landscapes evolve, I believe it is incumbent upon HRD partnerships of scholars and practitioners to build healthy, sustained learning workforces. I will promote the continued collaborative environment in AHRD where research is valued for its contribution to real-world problems and the experiences of those in practice are utilized to refine the models and theories being studied. My vision for AHRD is for those who want to think deeply and contribute strongly to find their home with us – Leading HRD Through Research.
I am an associate professor at the University of Louisville, and Program Director for the Master’s of Science in Human Resources and Organizational Development and Director of the Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education.
My vision for AHRD is one of exciting evolution and community building. My contribution to the Board will be one of optimism, confidence, and passion. I will contribute to this vision through active, and collaborative participation with my colleagues through a focus toward the future of what is possible for our collective field. I deeply believe in the future and possibility of AHRD and would love the chance to contribute to that collective vision through representative and intentional Board participation.
Currently, I sit on Editorial Boards for HRDQ, HRDR, ADHR, Group & Organizational Management, and the Journal of Managerial Psychology, and serve as Associate Editor for New Horizon’s in Adult Education and Human Resource Development. I represent UofL on the AHRD Program Excellence Network and have served on numerous committees including Book of the Year, Elections, and Dissertation of the Year, among others. My research has been routinely cited in US-based international media outlets including Forbes, The Washington Post, and TIME, as well as Business World Online and the Hindu Times. Within AHRD, I was named the 2016 Early Career Scholar, awarded the Excellence in Scholarly Practice (2016), the E F Holton III Outstanding Article of the Year (2013 and 2015) and the Advances in Developing Human Resources Outstanding Issue of the Year (2011).
Robert M. Yawson is an Assistant Professor of Management and the Graduate Programs Assessment Coordinator at Quinnipiac University School of Business. He is also the Faculty Director of the ePortfolio Across the Curriculum Initiative of the University. Robert has served in various capacities within AHRD. He was the Track Chair Editor of the Organization Development and Change Track of the 2015 Conference in the Americas, the Associate Proceedings Editor of the 2016 Conference, and the Proceedings Editor of the 2017 Conference. Robert is currently the Program Chair of the 2018 Conference. He has also served on the Wayne R. Pace Book of the Year Committee since 2014. Dr. Yawson has also served similar professional organizations in different capacities including Track Chair Editor for the 2017 Eastern Academy of Management Annual Conference, Associate Editor of the Social Issues in Management (SIM) Division of 2017 Academy of Management Annual Conference, and currently Associate Editor of the Organization Management Journal.
Robert welcomes the opportunity for his continuous contribution to AHRD by serving as a Board Member. He desires to further the reputation of the Academy through expanded and vibrant membership. Robert believes that we are at a point where Academic and Professional bodies are seeing dwindling membership and struggling to maintain their relevance. For the survival of the AHRD and continuous enhancement of its reputation, we must continue to define and defend our presence in the scholarly community and seek cooperative leverage points with other complementary disciplines to expand our membership.
President Elect Nominations
Any current or former Board member is eligible to be nominated to serve as President-Elect, with the assumption that that person will later serve as President and Past President. Self-nominations are accepted. AHRD has a strong commitment to diversity in its general membership and to the diversity of the membership of those serving in leadership roles. Those considering having their names placed in nomination should recognize the time commitment required for the leadership positions. The President-Elect oversees the annual conference. The President runs the Board meetings and ensures that the Board and Office work are accomplished. The Past-President typically undertakes international initiatives and works with the international conferences. The President-Elect serves for two years (2018-2019); the President serves for two years (2019-2020), and the Past President serves for two years (2020-2021). The person is expected to participate in all leadership conference calls, attend all the Board meetings during the annual conferences in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and one additional Board meeting during each year of the-term of office – typically held in the Fall. All presidential officers are expected to cover their own expenses for attendance at scheduled Board meetings.
Board Member Nominations
Any member of the AHRD, including former Board members, is eligible to be nominated to serve on the Board. Self-nominations are also accepted. Those considering having their names placed in nomination should recognize the time commitment required for Board assignments. Board members are elected for a three-year term and are expected to attend the Board meetings during the annual conferences in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and one additional Board meeting each year of the three-year term, which are scheduled in the fall and at various locations. Board members are expected to cover their own expenses for attendance at scheduled Board meetings.
