Two Pre-Conference Workshops

Nurturing Emotionally Intelligent Organizations through Action Learning

with Dr. Edie Williams and Dr. Dave Rude

Time: Wednesday, February 17 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm

For decades, private companies and public sector entities have leveraged research-based decision making through action learning. The research on action learning has shown that, overall, it is viewed as an effective business strategy intervention – proving its value as an action-oriented process for working through challenging problems. The connection between emotional intelligence and action learning, however, has not been researched. We propose, through this workshop, to concentrate on the following:

  • Exploring the role of emotional intelligence in the effectiveness of action learning interventions.
  • Developing recommendations designed to increase the effectiveness of organizational impact of action learning projects: achieving results and optimizing impact of the learning experience.
  • Developing a conceptual model for integrating EI into strategic planning and organizational culture by employing action learning concepts.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Experience working on an action learning project and becoming acclimated to it as an organizational learning and problem solving technique
  • A practical understanding of how an organization can become emotionally intelligent
  • A heightened awareness of each participant’s own emotional intelligence, by showcasing their strengths and areas in further improvement may be warranted
  • An opportunity to interact in a small group setting within a safe, risk-free environment, in order to promote their own learning about how they interact among each other and demonstrate emotional intelligence in the process
  • An action plan for participant’s emotional intelligence journey after the session, including opportunities for establishing peer accountability with other session participant(s)
  • An opportunity to contribute to a notable gap in the scholarly research as regards emotional intelligence

AHRD 2016 Speaker Dr. Dave Rude

Dr. Dave Rude is the Director, Office of Learning and Career Management at the U.S. Government’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). In this capacity, he leads strategies, policies, programs, and contemporary initiatives aimed at developing NNSA employees to reach their fullest potential. Through October 2015, Dave was the Chief Learning Officer for the Department of Defense’s civilian workforce of over 700,000 employees. Dave is the Learning Director for Organizational Science and Culture, Inc. He is also a senior professorial lecturer at the George Washington University – teaching graduate-level courses on designing adult learning interventions, organizational learning, and leadership. Dave has a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from George Mason University, an Executive Master’s in Public Administration from American University, and a Doctor of Education degree in Human and Organizational Learning from the George Washington University. His research interests are emotional intelligence, organizational culture, organizational diagnosis, leadership, and learning. In 2016, he will become credentialed as a Certified Action Learning Coach.

AHRD 2016 Speaker Dr. Edie Williams

Dr. Edie Williams is President of MEW Consulting, providing strategic planning and communications guidance to clients in the areas of research and development, change management, and organizational culture. She served for 25 years as a Naval Officer in leadership roles in the areas of program management, finance, and logistics. Edie has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University, a Master of Science Degree in Management from The United States Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Science Degree in International Relations from the United States Naval War College, and Doctoral Degree in Human & Organizational Learning from The George Washington University where she is currently employed as adjunct faculty. Edie is also certified by the International Coach Federation as a leadership and organizational coach.

Focus Group Design, Facilitation, and Integration with Quantitative Research

with Dr. Ann Gilley and Jessica Brown, MBA

Time: Thursday, February 18 from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

A focus group is a structured group interview and one of the most widely used methods of qualitative research. Focus groups gather participant opinions, attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs about a concept or topic. Although surveys are effective for collecting large quantities of information and may answer ‘what’ or ‘how many,’ focus groups allow for a deeper understanding of the topic and reveal ‘why.’ Thus, focus groups are an effective method to gather qualitative information and/or complement quantitative studies

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Design an effective focus group;
  • Create appropriate focus group questions;
  • Determine focus group logistics and set-up;
  • Assess their qualifications as a moderator;
  • Integrate focus groups into their qualitative or quantitative research; and
  • Disseminate focus group themes and responses.

Dr. Ann Gilley AHRD 2016 Conference in the Americas Pre-Conference worshop speaker

Ann Gilley is a professor of management at the University of Texas at Tyler, where she teaches graduate courses in strategy, OD, change, and research. She is an author, co-author, and editor of numerous books and articles, including The Manager as Change Leader, The Performance Challenge, and the Praeger Handbook of Human Resource Management. Ann’s business background includes approximately 15 years in insurance and financial services for large corporations, primarily in marketing and strategy, and nearly 15 years in management consulting as a Partner for Trilogy Performance Group. She consults in leadership development, change management, and strategic planning. Her areas of research include change, the organizational immune system, and managerial malpractice.

Dr. Gilley routinely conducts focus groups for clients, as part of her research, and for her PhD candidates. She has taught the fundamentals of focus groups, qualitative, and quantitative research for approximately 15 years to a variety of academic and practitioner audiences via university courses and practitioner workshops.

Jessica Brown is the Marketing Coordinator for the College of Business and Technology at the University of Texas at Tyler, and has used her focus group expertise to further university initiatives. She holds an MBA from UT-Tyler and earned her bachelor of administration in marketing with a minor in management from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Ms. Brown has two years of experience in designing, facilitating, and training others on how to conduct focus groups. Her most recent focus group sessions were for the Tyler Chamber of Commerce in association with the Tyler Veterans’ Roundtable. She is also a member of the Tyler Young Professionals Network through the Tyler Chamber of Commerce and is actively involved in the local community through her membership with the Junior League of Tyler. At UT-Tyler, Ms. Brown serves as a representative on the University Staff Advisory Council.
