AHRD Task Force on Member Well-Being and Support

Submitted by Eunbi Sim and Ana Carolina Rodriguez

The AHRD Board has launched a Task Force on Member Well-Being and Support to better understand and respond to the challenges many members are currently navigating.

Why has the Task Force been launched?

The AHRD Board recognizes that many are navigating unique and significant challenges amid the current US social, legal, policy, and institutional conditions affecting members' work and participation. Because the situations members face are often highly context-specific, there is no single solution. The Task Force has been established as a mechanism to listen to members, better understand these conditions, and explore what forms of support may be possible within AHRD's mission and capacities. As a small nonprofit organization, AHRD must ensure that its time, energy, and resources are directed toward initiatives that will meaningfully benefit members. In line with a core organization development principle—diagnosing conditions before designing interventions—the Task Force will gather information about members' experiences and translate those insights into recommendations the Board can evaluate and act upon where feasible.

What does the Task Force do?

The Task Force will:

Seek to understand the current US social, legal, policy, and institutional conditions affecting AHRD members

Explore ways AHRD can better understand how to support members within its mission and resources

Propose and initiate actions or recommendations for the AHRD Board consideration

Provide monthly updates to the AHRD Board on its activities and insights

How will the Task Force work?

The Task Force will operate over a four-month period (March 1 – July 1, 2026). The Task Force will meet biweekly throughout this period.

Phase 1: Task Force Kick-off (March 1 – May 1)

Phase 2: Understanding and Exploration (May 1 – June 1)

Gathering input from members

Identifying key challenges and potential areas of support

Phase 3: Proposing and Initiating Actions (June 1 – July 1)

Developing recommendations

Initiating feasible support efforts

Who leads the Task Force?

The co-chairs of the Task Force on Member Well-Being and Support are Eunbi Sim and Ana Carolina Rodriguez. The Task Force will include up to five additional members. We invite AHRD members who are interested in contributing to this effort to submit a brief expression of interest. Please email the co-chairs (eunbisim@boisestate.edu and rodr0667@umn.edu) by April 15, including a brief paragraph about your interest in joining this Task Force.

If there are more interested members than available positions, the co-chairs will recommend participants to the Board with attention to diversity across nationality, geographic regions, institutions, career stages (students and faculty), etc. Final appointments will be approved by the AHRD Board on April 17.

More details about the Task Force's activities will be shared in upcoming Digests.

Submitted by Rajash Ghosh (rg3578@tc.columbia.edu)

Dear AHRD Community,

Thank you for your ongoing involvement in our AHRD Mentoring Partner Program (MPP). Our participants often share how much the MPP has meant for creating supportive and sustainable relationships within the HRD community.

In our Participants' words:

I’ve enjoyed learning about the research interests of my mentoring triad. It’s been very helpful to have others from outside my program to speak with about coursework, research, and entering the job market.

Getting to know and learn from other colleagues, especially scholars who are seniors and reputable researchers. A lot of insights and words of wisdom were shared and stayed with me.

It has been tremendously helpful as I have been navigating a multitude of things this
semester. I also appreciate the connections that I have made this past year with
colleagues from other institutions.

I was matched with two wonderful people who shared a lot of interests and backgrounds. They had a profound effect on me where I didn't feel so alone or on an island as a PhD student, and that they also felt that way or had before in their same journey.

As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we’re planning some exciting program enhancements and would be grateful for your support through a nominal donation. For instance, we are working on inviting the President of the International Mentoring Association (IMA), Dr. Lisa Fain to join the 2026 AHRD conference and collaborate with us for the Town Hall as well as co-sponsor new Mentoring Award!!

We are also planning to introduce mentoring program swag as a small token of appreciation for your support. :)

Towards this goal, please make some time to donate to make this planning successful.
To help make these exciting plans a reality, we invite you to consider making a contribution—any amount from $10 to $500, or whatever you feel comfortable giving, is greatly appreciated.

You can donate using the following link: https://www.ahrd.org/page/ahrd-fundraising

Please be sure to note that your donation is for the Mentoring Program. We would appreciate your donations by the end of August!

We truly appreciate your support of the AHRD Mentoring Partner Program and look forward to continuing to serve HRD faculty and doctoral students, scholars, and scholar-practitioners for the next decade!

Regards

The 32nd AHRD International Research Conference in the Americas will take place in Arlington, Virginia, February 19-22, 2025. The program will include cutting-edge research from leading practitioners and scholars in the field. Additionally, the conference will include opportunities for professional development, networking, and generative learning through both formal and informal interactions. AHRD is an inclusive organization that welcomes all those who are interested in the field, no matter where they are on their scholarly journey.

Envisioning HRD’s legacy in 2055: Advocacy, leadership, and sustained change

The theme for the Academy of Human Resource Development’s 2025 International Research Conference in the Americas invites the HRD community to contribute to a strategic vision for the future of scholarship and scholarly practice. In 2023, AHRD reached its 30th year. The 2025 conference offers a platform to honor this milestone while looking ahead to the next 30 years (and beyond). The year 2055 serves as an anchor point for reflecting on the importance of advocacy, leadership, and sustained change for the next generation.

Some questions for consideration include: What emergent technologies and evolving organizational structures should or will be at the forefront? How will the interplay between global political dynamics, local cultural values, and challenges like climate change impact the field? Who will have a say in shaping a collective future, ensuring that efforts are guided by diverse perspectives and a strong ethos of collaboration?

Key dates

Submission system opening date: July 15, 2024

2025 Submission Tracks
The Academy of Human Resource Development welcomes submissions from all academic fields and disciplines that focus on workplace and organizational learning, performance, change, and related issues and challenges. We highly encourage submissions from scholar-practitioners across all conference submission tracks. We also specifically wish to invite submissions related to the theme: Envisioning HRD’s legacy in 2055: Advocacy, leadership, and sustained change. Consistent with AHRD’s commitment to antiracism, for the 2025 conference, we aim to increase the number of manuscripts focused on antiracism work and/or racial/social injustice. In addition, we encourage all submissions to consider potential connections between antiracism and the conference theme and to embed antiracism themes and implications across all conference submission tracks.

Conference submission tracks for this year are:

Position Description

The Associate Proceedings Editor is a vital leadership and volunteer position within the Academy of Human Resource Development Conference Planning Team. This position requires a three-year commitment with advancement to a position of increased
responsibility each successive year. The effective term for this position is May 2024 through March 2027. Development in the position follows an apprentice model where knowledge is shared, and duties and responsibilities grow over
three years. For instance, during the first year of the term, the selected candidate will serve as the Associate Proceedings Editor for the 2025 Conference Proceedings of the AHRD International Conference in the Americas. In the second
year, they will serve as Proceedings Editor for the 2026 Conference Proceedings. Finally, in the third year, they will serve as the Program Chair for the 2027 Conference.

many steps before it reaches the conference proceedings. The conference team manages the development process of the conference proceedings, including managing manuscripts, scheduling individual conference sessions, coordinating with
the conference planning team, and ensuring timely and accurate creation of the AHRD Conference Proceedings. The Associate Proceedings Editor plays a significant role in managing the review process and works closely with the Track Chair

Dr. Jeremy W. Bohonos, Assistant Professor, Texas State University

This special issue focuses on neurodiversity, a concept that embraces the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits as part of human variation (Grandin, 2010). Neurodiverse conditions include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, social anxiety disorder (SAD), and other conditions (Austin & Pisano, 2017). Around 10-20% worldwide are considered neurodivergent (Doyle, 2020; World Economic Forum, 2022). Despite the talents like problem-solving and creativity neurodiverse individuals possess (Bargiela et al., 2016), they are disproportionately unemployed or under-employed (Krzeminska et al., 2019), face barriers in career advancement and are underrepresented in leadership roles (Samosh, 2020). Although neurodiversity has gained significant attention among researchers and practitioners in recent years (Roberson et al., 2021), neurodiversity concerning Adult Education (AE) and Human Resource Development (HRD) has received little attention.

This special issue of the New Horizons in Adult Education and Human Resource Development journal is to illuminate neurodiversity concerning adult education (AE) and human resource development (HRD) in advancing theories, research, and practices that recognize and support neurodivergent individuals. It will explore pedagogical approaches, workplace integration, leadership and organizational development, policy development, and the implications of neurodiversity for learning and development strategies.

The paper is due on September 15, 2024.

A paper needs to be labeled as FirstAuthorLastName_NHAEHRD_ND. Please include a separate title page with the title, author(s) names, degrees, and institutions.

Please send your paper to Dr. Nakamura and Dr. Bohonos via email and use the email subject “Special Issue Submission”.
Special issue editors will review the papers for consideration. If they are accepted for the next phase, the subsequent step is to proceed to the peer review process. An additional timeline will follow.

The Antiracism Committee Bulletin: Continuing and Sustaining Antiracism Work in the AHRD

Submitted by Marilyn Y. Byrd

In September 2023, Dr. Chaunda Scott and I assumed co-leadership of the Antiracism Committee. Special recognition is extended to Dr. Laura Bierema and Dr. Joshua Collins for their past leadership and to the AHRD Board of Directors for helping the committee establish a presence within this organization. From this foundation, the Antiracism Committee continues to work towards influencing an antiracist mindset. We have evolved from a Task Force to an established committee with a focus on condemning racism in the AHRD and beyond.

In November 2023, the committee hosted a webinar, “A Conversation with the AHRD Antiracism Committee.” The purpose of that webinar was to reemphasize ways we envision addressing racism through focus areas such as:

research and scholarly practice

education, training, and development

outreach

the annual conference

academic programs

With each strand of the knot of [racism] that we help to work loose and unravel, we don’t act simply for ourselves, we join a process of creative resistance to oppression that’s been unfolding for thousands of years. We become part of the long tradition of people who have dared to make a difference–to look at things as they are, to imagine something better, and to plant seeds of change in [ourselves], in others, and in the world. (p. 171)
