2014 Annual Conference: Leading the Human Resource Development Field through Research

AHRD is celebrating its 21st annual conference in 2014 in Houston, Texas from Thursday, February 20th to Saturday, February 22nd. There will be preconference programs planned as well. AHRD is an inclusive organization and invites all those who are interested in the field, no matter where they are on the scholarly journey. The conference program promises to include leading scholars and senior-level practitioners reporting their cutting-edge research, providing opportunities for all to learn and network. Registration for the conference will open in early November, 2013.


Call for Proposals for Innovative Sessions
2014 AHRD International Research Conference in the Americas

The Academy of Human Resource Development invites proposals for Innovative Sessions for the
2014 AHRD International Research Conference in the Americas. Proposals are especially
encouraged from SIGs (Special Interest Groups) in AHRD.

Innovative Sessions are an opportunity to present new and innovative Human Resource Development work through creative, interactive formats that do not fit the traditional categories covered in the Call for Papers. Innovative Sessions should be strategically aligned with AHRD’s vision to "lead human resource development through research” and enhance the learning of participants.

Innovative Session submissions are non-­‐refereed. They will be scheduled in the conference program and published in a non-­‐refereed section of the proceedings. Space for Innovative Sessions during the 2014 conference is very limited, and we anticipate a highly competitive selection process.


How to Propose an Innovative Session

A proposal for an Innovative session must include two distinct parts.


Part 1: Description of the Proposed Session

  • Session Title.
  • Full contact information of Organizer(s)/Proposer(s) of the session.
  • Identification of the track that the session would best align with. The tracks for the 2014 Conference in the Americas are:
    • Workplace Learning
    • Organization Development & Change
    • International, Global & Cross-­‐Cultural Issues
    • Leadership & Career Development
    • Critical, Social Justice, Diversity Perspective sin HRD
    • HRD Performance & Strategy
    • Technology, E-­‐Learning & Virtual HRD
  • Assessment & EvaluationPurpose, goals, and target audience for the session. •
  • Brief justification for the session that addresses (a) its theoretical and practical significance as well as (b) how participants will benefit from the session.
  • Agenda of the session (with key points and time break-­‐out). Note: AHRD expects innovative sessions to be highly interactive and engage participants.
  • •Name and brief bio (no more than 1 paragraph) of each presenter, panelist, etc..

Part 2: Proposed Submission for the Conference Proceedings
  • This is what will be published in the non-­‐refereed section of the conference proceedings. This should provide valuable, scholarly content related to the session; and must include at least the following:
    • Session Title
    • Names & Affiliations of presenter(s) Abstract/brief description of the session (not to exceed 200 words)
    • Reference list/bibliography that guides readers towards scholarship underlying and/or related to the session.
  • The entire submission should be nomore than2000words(allinclusive) and must comply with formatting and writing style standards as defined by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (6th ed.).

How will Proposals be evaluated?

Proposals will be reviewed by Track Chairs and their selected committee. While the evaluation process is non-­‐refereed, it is a highly competitive due to the limited number of Innovative Sessions that will be offered. Sessions will be selected according to the criteria below as well as to optimize the innovativeness and diversity of the sessions (topic and type) within the tracks and across the conference.


Proposals (and the accompanying up to 2000-­‐word submission) will be evaluated on the following criteria:


  • •Relevance of the session (as related to key trends in HRD, AHRD’s vision, connection with
  • AHRD SIG’s strategy/initiatives, and/or the theme of the conference).
  • •Theoretical and practical significance.
  • •Innovativeness/provocativeness (extent to which the session offers new perspectives and/or stretches thinking about key issues in innovative ways).
  • •Provides content of value for session participants.


•Session is designed to (a) effectively achieve purpose/aims of the session and (b) actively engage participants.


Timeline for the Innovative Session Submissions

Proposals for Innovative Sessions must be sent to Wendy Ruona ( no later than
Monday, October 7, 2013 (midnight PT).

Proposers will receive decisions and feedback from the editorial team in late-­‐October.

Final (2000 word) submissions for accepted Innovative Sessions will be due no later than
November 11, 2013 (midnight PT).

2014 Call for Proposals for Food N’ Though Sessions

If you missed the deadline to submit a paper on one of the tracks scheduled for the 2014 AHRD conference you still have an opportunity to dialogue with scholars and practitioners who may have a mutual interest in your topic. Submit your proposal on a scholarly topic in a category listed below. You will have access to all conference participants and an opportunity to get immediate feedback to further your personal research agenda.


Food N’ Thought (FNT) sessions are 1-hour informal brown bag sessions where participants dialogue about a scholarly topic of interest. We will be holding our FNT sessions first thing in the morning, giving you an opportunity to plant some seeds in our attendees as they start their day.


The purpose of the FNT session is two-fold. One purpose is to encourage scholarly dialogue on topics important to the field of HRD. The second purpose is to build a sense of community by helping to ensure that no participant at the conference should have to eat alone. For that reason, we always look for an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere at our FNT sessions.


In the past, FNT topics have included globalization, leadership, organizational learning, spirituality, book reviews, and more. FNT call for proposals includes three types of FNT sessions:

·Research & Practice: Scholars from research and practice team up to offer their perspectives on a scholarly topic

·Research Horizons: Any innovative dialogue on a topic of current or future research interest in AHRD

·Book Club: A review and dialogue on a recent book of interest to members of AHRD

Submission guidelines:

·500 word (maximum) proposal and a 150-200 word abstract in one WORD file

·Identify the type of FNT session (Research & Practice, Research Horizons, or Book Club)

·Preferred day (Friday or Saturday) of session

·Complete contact information (Title, Position, Institution, contact info)

Submissions are reviewed for innovative opportunities for field growth in both theoretical exploration as well as implications for practice.
