Faculty Development Workshop: Navigating the Promotion and Tenure Process: A Workshop for Early and Mid-career Faculty

Academia has always held high standards for promotion and tenure.  With challenges to the role of universities and the role of faculty in those universities, the route to promotion and tenure can seem mysterious, and at times overwhelming.  So, what must a early career faculty member do to achieve promotion and tenure?  After having achieved promotion and tenure, what must a mid-career faculty member do to attain the position of Full Professor?

The path to promotion and tenure can become even more difficult for women, given social expectations that they are the primary family caregivers and the challenges of balancing life and work. Should one stop the tenure clock?  Opt out of service activities? Make teaching a lower priority? What might be the consequences? These issues become even more complex for dual-career couples that choose academic positions. This interactive workshop focuses on key steps in working toward promotion and tenure and then promotion to Full Professor. While promotion and tenure expectations will differ among institutions, workshop participants will explore common challenges grounded in recent literature exploring factors that influence faculty success. Participants will also develop useful skills to achieving promotion and tenure at different career stages, learn tips on managing their time and handling stress, creating research partnerships, developing a research agenda and strategy, and navigating political issues associated with tenure and promotion. This is a first in a series of professional development opportunities focused on early and mid-career faculty sponsored by AHRD.


The workshop will be co-led by Laura Bierema, Professor at the University of Georgia and Holly M. Hutchins, Associate Professor at the University of Houston.  Both facilitators have been actively involved in faculty development initiatives for several years, serving as mentors for early and mid-career faculty. Laura received her doctorate in adult education from UGA, and a master’s degree in labor and industrial relations and a bachelor’s degree in human relations, both from Michigan State University.  She currently serves as immediate past Faculty Senate President of the College of Education at UGA. Holly received her master’s degree in Communication Studies and doctorate in Applied Technology, Training and Development from the University of North Texas. She currently leads the Faculty Development subcommittee of the Commission on Women where she was instrumental in UH’s participation in the Collaborative of Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Tenure-Track Faculty Satisfaction survey and the NSF ADVANCE proposal.
