Emerging Scholars Preconference: $150.00 U.S.
Making Connections: A Development and Connecting Experience for Emerging Scholars and Scholarly Practitioners

Wednesday February 24, 2010 @ 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thursday February 25, 2010 @ 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Scholar Learning and Development SIG and the Scholar Practitioner SIG are co-sponsoring the Emerging Scholar preconference titled "Making Connections: A development and connecting experience for emerging scholars and scholarly practitioners” at the 2010 International Research Conference . The preconference will begin on Wednesday, February 24 at 8 a.m. and conclude with a joint lunch on Thursday, February 25. This preconference will offer shared and focused tracks for both scholars and scholarly practitioner professional development. This preconference engenders the spirit of the AHRD by creating professional development opportunities for emerging scholars regardless of professional area or practice. The preconference format respects and honors these differences by providing opportunities for targeted breakout sessions for each group and then shared topics that would be of interest to both groups.

The preconference is specifically encouraged for new faculty, graduate students who will soon be entering an academic or professional position, and scholarly practitioners interested in learning more about developing their research skills. Some of the topics included in the preconference include: HRD journal editors discussing publication tips, scholar-practitioners sharing strategies on how to be a workplace champion for research and theory, experienced scholars discussing how they conduct applied research, suggestions by notable scholar and scholar-practitioners on how to narrow the research-practice gap, and faculty (at all career stages) discussing issues pertinent to early career faculty, and more!

For participants registering as scholars, the Thursday morning session will be a review opportunity for working manuscripts. Recognized scholars will review working manuscripts (approx. 3-5 pages) prior to the preconference and provide participants with feedback. Working manuscripts must be submitted to Dr. Holly M. Hutchins at on/before January 15, 2010.

The preconference will be co-facilitated by Holly M. Hutchins, University of Houston and Jason Moats, Texas A/M University; however, the course sessions will be facilitated by recognized scholars and scholar-practitioners.
