I recently returned from the Washington, DC area, where we held our 20th international conference in the Americas. As ever, it was wonderful to be around so many HRD scholars spending time together focused on advancing HRD through research. I always leave our conferences with my batteries re-charged as a result of the energy that comes from our discussions, presentations and just from being around people who share the same passion. This year, the conference also provided an ideal opportunity for us to celebrate our achievements over the last 20 years: we are the proud sponsors of 4 journals, we have run or sponsored more than 40 conferences, and we offer our members a variety of opportunities to engage through SIGs and webinars. The conference was therefore an ideal venue to thank all of those who made it possible. We stand on the shoulders of those who founded our association, who founded our journals, and whose vision directed us to this point.
During the conference, we held our annual business meeting, where I presented a summary of the state of AHRD. I am delighted to report that AHRD remains strong financially after a good 2011-12 financial year that saw us recovering from a couple of more challenging years. In addition to our finances being stronger, our membership base is also rebounding following the economic downturn, and we have topped 600 members for the first time in two years. All of this points to a sound foundation on which the AHRD Board can act to further advance HRD. Over the last six months, the Board has returned to a core strategic discussion of how we focus our energies toward our vision and mission, and how such a focus influences key decisions related to our deliverables. This is part of a larger conversation related to how AHRD evolves in its third decade, and what it will look like by 2023 when we hold our 30th Americas conference. The Board is working on this, and will engage membership in that discussion in the coming months.
Finally – a note of thanks. Our conference highlights how AHRD is made up of committed volunteers who are willing to dedicate many hours of their personal time because of their belief in the organization and its vision. Without their passion, energy, ideas and drive, AHRD would surely decline. We owe much to those who support AHRD and its mission through their time as conference organizers and volunteers, journal editors, SIG and track chairs, reviewers, authors, session hosts, and more. We are an association of enthusiasts who come together because of our shared passion for research and for HRD in the belief that we can truly advance the profession through our collaboration. I thank each one of you for all you offer to AHRD that helps to make us successful!

MSKE Conference 2013 Call for Papers
Did you miss the UFHRD/AHRD European Conference last year in Portugal? Or did you simply love Portugal? Here’s another chance to visit this beautiful country!! Join the MSKE (Managing Services in the Knowledge Economy) conference sponsored by Universidade de Villa Nova de Familicao, the host of last year’s UFHRD/AHRD European conference, July 17-19, 2013; a preconference will be held on July 16!
The purpose of the conference is to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to knowledge management. Abstracts are due by April 8. Final, full papers are due on July 5. Keynote speakers will be Gary N. Academy for Leadership and Action Summer Fellowship
What is the Academy for Leadership and Action? ?The Task Force's Academy prepares leaders to fill the staff, board, and volunteer roles critical to the success of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movement. Through community and political organizing, we strive to win immediate policy gains, develop leadership and long-term organizational capacity and build stronger alliances between secular and religious communities. ? ?The Task Force is committed to building a social justice movement where everyone can be their full selves. We work with individuals and communities that reflect the full spectrum of LGBT people and their allies. We bring a racial and economic justice analysis to all of our movement-building work and make explicit the connections to struggles against systematic oppression. The Academy for Leadership and Action’s ultimate goal is to build movements, leaders and organizations that transform society.
?What is the Academy Fellowship? This is not your average fellowship! This is your chance to create change! The Academy Fellowship is a subsidized social justice fellowship that's furiously intense. The program provides the firsthand, real-world experience working for social justice that is necessary for becoming a professional organizer. You’ll learn to disseminate a progressive worldview that connects LGBT issues to struggles against racism, classism, ableism, and spiritual oppression; to build relationships with a broad cross-section of other LGBT movement leaders, especially in communities of faith and communities of color; and to mobilize mass numbers of people to achieve immediate political gains for the LGBT community. ?Applications must be submitted by Friday, April 19. Decisions will be made and communicated by Friday, May 17.

Encyclopedia of Education and Technology in a Changing Society: Call for Chapter Proposals
The Encyclopedia of Education and Technology in a Changing Society will feature full length chapters (around 5,000 words per chapter) authored by leading experts offering an in-depth description of concepts related to different areas, issues, and trends in education and technology at all levels in this changing society. Additionally, this volume will provide a compendium of terms, definitions, and explanations of concepts, processes, and acronyms. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before March 29, 2013, a chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. More than one chapter proposal from well-established researchers and practitioners is welcome. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified between April 5 and April 15, 2013, about the status of their proposals and sent guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 31, 2013. All submitted chapters will be reviewed in a double-blind review process. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
This encyclopedia is scheduled to be published by IGI Global. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit www.igi-global.com. International HRD Conference
Human resource development (HRD) and Sustainable development lie in a mutually co-constructive relationship. New and powerful conceptual and ethical frameworks can be developed to address the long standing tension in the field. As HRD grapples with sustainability there is a need to address its own developmental dilemmas, which may give rise to a more focused HRD; one that is more aligned with the dilemmas of today's complex, global society. The theme has been chosen in line with this and issues surrounding excellence in HRD for sustainable development for nations, organizations and individuals are central to this conference. Conference will take place October 17-18, 2013.

Technically Speaking: Hanging Out with Google Hangout

There are several free video-conference options available these days. Skype is one of the most common. Another option is a "Google Hangout” through Google Plus, which integrates services such as Google Docs and Gmail. Google Plus is similar to Facebook, but not yet as commercially driven, and it has some different features. With Google Hangout, you can have more people on a video call for free than Skype – up to 9 people. To get started, you need to have a Gmail account and Google Plus account (https://plus.google.com).
There are two ways to create a hangout from Google Plus. The first way is to simply click on the "Start a Hangout” button on the upper right corner of the screen. This activates your web camera and opens a new web page that allows you to invite others. You can type in email addresses to which the invitation and hangout link will go, or you can select a circle. Circles allow you to designate several people in a group so that you send one invitation to the entire list. For example, I have a large circle of Northeastern University colleagues and a smaller circle of colleagues for a committee that meets regularly in a hangout. Once you select your participants, you hit the blue hangout button, which activates the application. Once the hangout is started, there are several functions, including chat, screen share, and access to your Google drive so that you can collaboratively work on documents. A less utilitarian but somewhat hilarious option is to use the Google Effects, which gives you sound effects, such as clapping hands or a drum roll, and you can even add fashionable headwear, including a cat-in-the-hat hat or a princess tiara.
The second way to create a hangout is by creating an "Event” in Google Plus, which is a button on the left navigational bar on the main page. It opens a planning tool, which allows you to create your next hangout. This is a great feature if you want to plan a meeting in advance. You select the date, time, and the participants (as before), and you can even select animated themes, such as a birthday party or winter scene that shows skiers riding a lift. Although your participants should get an invitation directly from Google Plus, I have found it useful to follow up by pasting the hangout URL in an email or into an Outlook calendar appointment. I‘ve found that people seem to have an easier time connecting to the hangout when they go the URL directly. Hangouts are a great way to meet in a virtual space, and they can be recorded – and posted to Youtube if desired. Along with committee work, we’ve considered using hangouts for student discussions and virtual brown bag lunches. Be sure to check out privacy policies before using Google Plus for sensitive information. It’s easy to get started; you’ll be "hanging out” in no time!

Dr. Satish Pandey is currently working with School of Petroleum Management (SPM), Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar as Associate Professor in Organizational Behaviour & HRM area, since August 2007. He has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar (Uttarakhand). Currently, Satish teaches courses in Organizational Behavior, Organizational Dynamics & Change Management, Managing Cross-Cultural Issues, Creativity & Innovation Management, Stress Management, and Human Resource Management.
Satish joined AHRD in December 2012, but has previously attended three AHRD conferences (Bangalore, 2002; Bangkok, 2003 and Cheltenham, 2011). When asked about his AHRD experience, he said, "My participation in the AHRD 2013 conference was a good experience, as for first time in my life, I was presenting two research papers in any conference and I was invited by the Scholar Learning & Development SIG as an expert in their panel presenting my innovative idea (a simulation for management classroom)… I like the AHRD culture of promoting volunteerism in running different committees (rather say teams) and the way existing senior members are inducting newcomers to contribute in the growth of the association.”
The last book Satish read was Brick by Red Brick by T. T. Ram Mohan (Rupa & Co., 2011). This book explores the historical development of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and its evolution into a great academic institution of India.

Morris Appointed Skinner Professor in Management
M. Lane Morris has been appointed the Skinner Professorship in Management. The professorship was made possible by an estate gift from the late Sarah E. Skinner of Charlotte, North Carolina. Morris is a professor in the Department of Management and has served as a UT faculty member for 20 years. He is director of the Global Leadership Scholars undergraduate honors program in the College of Business Administration, and is a Past President of AHRD. Dr. Wendy Ruona and Hanna Moon at the University of Georgia are currently working to develop a survey that measures an organization’s Strategic Learning Capability—the capacity of an organization to retool rapidly to create and execute new strategies through learning at the individual and system level in response to changes and uncertainties in a complex environment.
