Welcome to the New Digest

To Academy Members,

Welcome to the improved Digest! As you will see, the Digest has been enhanced to include more information for members, and to be a source for news, information and ideas of interest to HRD scholars and practitioners. You will see that some of what you have come to expect from the Digest hasn’t gone away, but we have included some new sections including SIGnals and Technically Speaking. The President’s Message has been expanded to From the Board and will include messages from the president, as well as reports from various board members on their Academy work and initiatives.SIGnals features news and notes from the AHRD SIGs, and beginning next month will feature a column from one SIG. This gives all members a chance to learn what SIGs are engaged in and how it might connect to the larger work of the Academy. Technically Speaking will address issues, ideas, and trends in technology that impact or improve HRD research and practice. In the coming months, look for columns that explore useful websites and software, issues of virtual work and learning, and tips for using technology in your practice. Since members are the heart of AHRD, we will now spotlight a member each month. It gives us all an opportunity to learn about the work of other members, a chance to put names to faces, and recognize the contributions of our colleagues. Another new section to the Digest, The PEN is Mightier, will feature the work and institutional members of the Program of Excellence Network (PEN). The column will include topics of interest to faculty and students in HRD programs, resources for instructors, and issues relevant to the future of teaching, scholarship, and research in HRD. The last sections of the Digest are ones we’ve come to expect each month:Announcements, Job Openings, and Volunteer Opportunities.Announcements is the place to turn for news about AHRD events and programming, deadlines, grants and publishing opportunities, and news about our HRD colleagues. If you have anything you’d like to share with the Academy – promotions, job changes, retirements, major life events, or other announcements – please send those Job Openings can target your organization’s openings to those in the Academy and Volunteer Opportunities highlights specific ways to get involved in AHRD. Check the VO spot for calls for new, short-term committee members, journal and conference reviews, and SIG volunteers – if you want to be an active and involved member of the Academy, we want you to have that opportunity.


The new Digest format is the first step in expanding and enhancing communication to, and among, Academy members. In the coming months, look for an expanded presence on Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as Twitter. These various forms of social media, as well as the AHRD webpage, will give you the latest on journal publications, calls for submissions, work of the Academy and resources to enhance scholarship and practice. Thinking Ahead to the 2013 Conference

Dear AHRD Members,

Before the dust even settled in Denver, your 2013 Conference Team is already busy planning next year's event in Washington, DC! As a part of that planning, there are two important issues that need to be communicated now.

First, recruitment has started for the Associate Proceedings Editor position. This is a highly visible and important leadership position in the Academy. Preferred qualifications include: associate level faculty status, significant publication record, and willingness to serve in the three-year leadership role that culminates in the Program Chair (e.g., year one: Associate Proceedings Editor; year two: Proceedings Editor; and year three: Program Chair). Second, the Call for Papers will be distributed in April or May. Please note that the CFP will likely have changes to the format and timing of submissions for the 2013 conference. We will update you as we move forward about these exciting enhancements to the conference process.

Scholar-Practitioner SIG

The SIG has a call out for papers for Advances in Developing Human Resources, titled A Scholar-Practitioner Case Approach: Implications for Advancing Theory and Research Through Practice. The issue will be edited by Drs. Brad Shuck, Rachelle Lehner, and Ellen Scully-Russ. Proposals are due April 1, 2012.

Virtual HRD Spotlight: ePortfolios are no longer just for higher education

In the current economic crisis, competition for jobs can be fierce for new graduates as well as for experienced business people. Many organizations, too, are seeking new ways to evaluate a candidate’s credentials, to develop existing employees, and to gauge the performance of individuals and groups within the organization. Tactics such as behavioral event interviewing facilitate a broader range of responses from potential employees but they depend heavily on self-reports. What is missing is more detailed evidence of a candidate’s skill. Electronic portfolios (ePorfolios) may be one answer to providing a more holistic and evidence-based view of employees.

ePortfolios began as a movement in higher education. They can be as simple as files organized on a CD, a basic website, or as complex modules that integrate with existing learning management and human resource systems. Currently, a number of colleges and universities require students to complete an ePorfolio prior to graduation because ePortfolios help schools determine student progress, maintain accreditation standards, and allow students reflective spaces for connecting classwork and real-life experiences. Many schools also recognize the potential to boost their graduates’ hiring potential. Students can share their ePortfolios with hiring organizations and place the web link on their resumes. Given that employers are now researching a candidate’s "digital fingerprints” – that is, searching for their names online and requesting access to such social networking sites as LinkedIn and Facebook – there is an incentive to create a positive web presence through ePortfolios to provide a professional web image.

As organizations become used to seeing the functionality and usefulness of ePortfolios built for higher education purposes, I project there will be a growing expectation that all professionals will have at least a basic ePortfolio in the near future. Additionally, business units may use ePortfolios to showcase their accomplishments within the organization, perhaps as a souped-up annual report, or to market services to external clients. When ePortfolios are strategically connected to other organizational information technology resources, they will become a microcosm of Virtual HRD, which is a strategic, media-rich, and culturally relevant webbed environment (Bennett, 2009). ePortfolios are more likely to take off in professions that have an extensive longitudinal training arc, such as medical education and teacher preparation programs, as well as professions that require periodic re-certifications and continual education. The ability to track and automatically update credentials will be a tremendous advantage to a number of professional domains.

What’s the downside to ePortfolios? There are probably many that will be discovered over time. From my vantage point, there are at least three major issues to consider. First, ePortfolios are time-consuming to build and to read through. Second, ePortfolio authors must be savvy in how they portray themselves, selecting the best evidences for given audiences. This means they must understand how to manage their electronic image. Younger professionals may need to be mentored to select the best evidences. Third, given the portability of electronic information, there is a great potential for people to unwittingly distribute proprietary knowledge or engage in illegal activities, such as libel, copyright infringement, and private information disclosure. In essence, a powerful tool can be powerfully misused. Still, the advantages of ePortoflios may overcome these challenges. Next time you have a search engine open,"google” ePortfolios and see the array of examples already out there. You will find a broad cross section of styles and personalities on the Internet.

Member Spotlight

Marie-Line GermainMarie-Line Germain, PhD

Marie-Line Germain, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Human Resources and Leadership at the University of North Carolina; she has been an active member of AHRD since 2004. During that time, Marie-Line has worked with a number of Academy members and groups to improve HRD research and scholarship. In particular she has presented at AHRD conferences, is a member of the Virtual HRD SIG, and in the past has served as a symposium and track chair. Marie-Line received the Malcolm S. Knowles Dissertation of the Year Award in 2006, and now serves as a member of that committee. Marie-Line is currently reading: A First-Rate Madness: Uncovering the Links Between Leadership and Mental Illness (Nassir Ghaemi, 2011),Sick on the Job? Myths and Realities about Mental Health and Work (OECD Publishing; 2012), andEn Chute Libre (Carl de Souza, 2012). Her most memorable AHRD moments were receiving the 2006 Dissertation of the Year Award and feeling the award was more gratifying than her PhD degree because it was awarded by experts in the field, and dancing on bar tables with AHRD colleagues at Beaver's Tavern that same year ~We agree Marie-Line, both are great and memorable moments!

The PEN is Mightier...

The Program Excellence Network (PEN) is committed to strengthening HRD academic programs and promoting excellence in teaching HRD. It provides a forum for its members to explore, learn, and work together to shape the future direction of HRD education. This includes professional development as well as fostering the scholarship of teaching.

At the 2012 PEN meeting, Paul Roberts at UT Tyler completed and presented to the group the newest edition of the annual Human Resource Development (HRD) Directory of Academic Programs in the United States. Great job – and a big thank you to Paul and his colleagues in Tyler.

During the 2012 meeting, PEN representatives heard about some new and innovative roles technology is playing in HRD research and practice. Martin Lanik, PhD, a Business Psychologist and Management Consultant for Global Assessor Pool, presented on the use of simulations in leadership development and Dr. James Folkestad, an Associate Professor at Colorado State University, spoke to the group on the use of gaming and other technologies for teaching and learning HRD.

It was also announced that Wendy Ruona, PhD, will be leading PEN in the coming years in her new role on the Board as Vice President for Development and Education.

PMI Academic Resources Opens Call for Research Proposals

This year’s call for proposals for 2013 funding opened on 1 February and closes on 25 April 2012.

We seek proposals from scholars, both within and outside the field of project management, including management, organizational psychology, sociology, education, linguistics and others. Proposed research must have a direct application to some aspect of the project management body of knowledge or its practice. In addition, we encourage proposals on research involving multi-disciplinary teams of investigators or teams consisting of academics and practitioners, who bring new ways of thinking and related bodies of literature to the field.

Those advancing to the second round will be notified by July 2012. All grant recipients will be notified of awards up to US $50,000 by November 2012. Funded projects begin on 1 January 2013.Learn more.

Hosted by European School of Management & Technology and the International Leadership Association will take place June 13-15, 2012, at ESMT's campus in the center of Berlin. The forum is designed for board and senior management level executives in charge of strategic decisions regarding workplace structures, as well as leadership and talent development coaches and consultants in these areas, and HR professionals, as well as academics, government and NGO officials interested and focused in the areas of leadership and demography and will address the implications of this demographic crossroad from an international perspective.
