As members of AHRD, we all enjoy the benefit of four refereed journals each year. These journals provide an extraordinary contribution to the field by publishing high-quality, refereed research and theory articles, as well as theory to practice ideas and solutions. With the rather impressive title of Past President and Senior VP of Research, Education, and Development, I would like to describe each of the journals, address some issues with them, and suggest some ways in which you can strengthen the journals.

 

Human Resource Development Quarterly (HRDQ). HRDQ was launched in 1990 and was the first peer-reviewed or refereed journal in the field of HRD to provide a central focus for disseminating research on HRD. HRDQ is a respected forum for interdisciplinary and scholarly exchange on the subject of HRD. The journal primarily publishes empirically-based research (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods) that advances the field of HRD. It is currently ranked 37/81 in SCOPUS and is the only AHRD-sponsored journal to hold an SSCI ranking. The SSCI 2012 impact factor is 0.653 and the 2012 ranking of the journal in its subject categories is 12/24 (Industrial Relations and Labor), 130/172 (Management) and 58/72 (Applied Psychology). The current editor is Professor Andrea D. Ellinger of The University of Texas at Tyler.

Human Resource Development International (HRDI) was launched in 1998 and represents joint sponsorship of AHRD and the University Forum for HRD. The journal "promotes all aspects of practice and research that explore issues of individual, group and organizational learning and performance.” Furthermore, it is "committed to questioning the divide between practice and theory; between the ’practitioner’ and the ’academic,’ and between traditional and experimental methodological approaches." The current editor-in-chief is Professor Alexandre Ardichvili of the University of Minnesota.

 

Advances in Developing Human Resources (ADHR) began in 1999. Rather than publish unrelated articles, each issue focuses on a specific topic, with an emphasis on Research to Practice. There is an issue editor or editors, and they assemble and edit the articles related to a specific topic. "The journal spans the realms of performance, learning, and integrity within an organizational context.” The current editor-in-chief is Professor Kimberly S. McDonald of Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

 

Human Resource Development Review (HRDR) was launched in 2002 as the theory journal for HRD scholars. The journal publishes non-empirical articles to include theory development, foundations of HRD, theory building methods, integrative literature reviews, archival histories of HRD, philosophies of HRD, and more. It is currently indexed in SCOPUS (ranking 35/81 of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management journals) and, while not yet ranked in SSCI, its estimated impact factor as measured by Sage Publishers is 0.465. The current editor is Professor Jamie Callahan of Drexel University.

 

Issues of Concern and What You Can Do

Issue 1. The major concern for each journal involves receiving high-quality manuscripts that focus on HRD. Having been an editor and having sat in innumerable editorial board meetings, the issue that gets raised most often involves "manuscript flow.” No journal can continue publishing issues unless there are enough articles with relevant content.

 

Solution: If you have presented at the AHRD conference, particularly if you have presented a full paper, then you really should use the feedback from the reviewers and the audience during the presentation to improve the paper. You should then submit that paper to one of the AHRD-sponsored journals. When considering a publication outlet for a previous AHRD conference paper or a new manuscript, you really should examine one of the AHRD journals to see if the aims and purposes are compatible with the manuscript. It may be appropriate to email the editor or editor-in-chief with a brief abstract and inquire as to the suitability of the manuscript.

 

You may experience a situation in which the editor or editor-in-chief indicates that the manuscript appears appropriate, but after the peer review, you receive a letter indicating "revise and resubmit” or "major revision” or "reject in its present form, but invite resubmission.” Do not be discouraged! The editor or editor-in-chief, along with the reviewers, should provide detailed commentary to help you identify what revisions are needed. Take their advice, revise the manuscript, and resubmit it. The resubmissions have a much higher probability of being accepted and then published.

 

Issue 2. Another major concern expressed by all of the editors involves the need for more reviewers. Each submitted manuscript needs and deserves multiple reviewers. Until the editor or the editor’s assistant can identify reviewers and get them to agree to do the review, the manuscript simply sit in limbo, leading to a lag in the review time.

 

Solution: If you have published in one of the AHRD journals, you should assume the responsibility of serving as a reviewer for one or more of the journals. If you have not been contacted by a journal to act as a reviewer, then you should take the initiative to contact the editor or editor-in-chief to express your willingness to serve. In that email or letter, you should include a CV or resume so that the editor or editor-in-chief can identify your areas of expertise.

 

Issue 3. Ranking in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) by the firm Thompson-Reuters has become important for many academicians. Although AHRD does have one journal (HRDQ) that is ranked, some members are concerned that we need to have the other journals ranked as well.

 

Solution: A journal will receive such ranking only when it receives a sufficient number of citations in other SSCI-ranked journals. Furthermore the citations need to be for articles that have appeared in the past two years. If you do have a manuscript that is being sent to a non-AHRD but an SSCI-ranked journal, be sure to include citations to the latest articles in HRDQ, HRDI, ADHR, and HRDR.

 

Conclusion

The health and the vital content of the AHRD journals depend upon each one of you. Submitting manuscripts to the journals, serving as a reviewer, and citing AHRD journal articles will aid the journals in remaining current and substantive.

From the President

Board Change

Occasionally, Board members need to leave the Board before their term ends. When that happens, the Board follows the AHRD Bylaws and considers the options for best meeting the needs of the Academy and of the Board. As some of you may know already, Shani Carter resigned from the Board in June. Shani has been very active with the Board for the last 18 months, and played a key leadership role with our Special Interest Groups. As a result of her departure, the Board voted to invite Martin Kormanik to return to the Board to serve the remainder of Shani's term. Martin has been an AHRD member for 10+ years and served the Board from 2010-2012, including being the Board's SIG liaison for much of that time. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Shani for all of her hard work, and also to welcome Martin back to the Board. To see a list of all the current Board members, please visit our website. Asia AHRD Conference andCall for Papers

The 12th International Conference of the Asia Chapter of Academy of Human Resource Development will be held November 5-8, 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan. The Conference theme this year isNew Perspectives of HRD and Social Networking in the Globalizing Workplace and is organized by the Graduate Institute of International Human Resource Development, National Taiwan Normal University. Pre-conference Workshops will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 5-6, 2013, with the main conference sessions on Thursday and Friday, November 7-8, 2013.

Call for Abstracts for Advances in Developing Human Resource

"HRD Responses to Gender and Diversity issues in India”

On behalf of AHRD’s SIG for India, Meera Alagaraja (University of Louisville), Vishal Arghode (Gannon University), and Gary N. McLean (McLean Global Consulting, Inc.) are preparing a proposal for an ADHRissue exploring the role of HRD in addressing diversity and gender issues in organizations in India. In addition to gender, we hope to focus on age, social class, educational levels, and other factors that may prejudice employers in the employment related decisions.

 

Organizations that enhance and encourage diversity and gender equity have the potential to leverage significant competitive advantage. Inclusion and diversity initiatives can help to manage organizational expectations, clarify core values and norms as they encourage diverse ideas in the workplace. HRD professionals have an important role in improving diversity and inclusion for enhancing individual productivity, work group performance, and the overall well being of employees.

 

We invite interested authors to submit abstracts on this topic which focus on equal employment opportunity initiatives, gender and diversity efforts in the Indian context. The abstract must include the following information for further consideration:

 

Abstracts should be about 500 words, excluding references and keywords. The abstract must consist of a purpose statement, connection to gender and diversity related issues in India, and relevance to HRD. Abstract submissions are due to meera.alagaraja@louisville.edu by August 15, 2013. We hope to be able to have full manuscripts by January 1, 2014.

 

The 11th International Conference on Knowledge, Economy and Management (ICKEM)

ICKEM will be held between November 27 and 30, 2013 in Valetta, Malta, in partnership with Istanbul Medeniyet University and University of Malta. This international conference aims to bring the researchers, experts, scientists, and practitioners working in the fields of Knowledge, Economy, and Management together to provide an environment conducive to sharing, discussing, and spreading new knowledge and practices.

Member Spotlight

Dr. Toby Egan

This month our member spotlight is on Dr. Toby Egan. Toby is formerly a vice-president of a Minneapolis-based consulting firm and director of international HRD programs at Texas A&M University. Currently, he is an associate professor at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology-IUPUI, where he leads the HRD graduate program. His research focuses on learning organizations, coaching and dyadic development, action learning and action research, diversity, and creativity.

 

Toby has been a member of AHRD since 1996. He was encouraged by a work colleague to attend and found the mix of research-theory and practice to be a great mix. He stated, "I found my first AHRD Conference to be unusually positive for a "research conference." There were lots of friendly and interesting people who were unusually enthusiastic about HRD research and practice. As a graduate of the University of Minnesota program, where we were expected to publish as students, AHRD was a great help in developing my research skills and helping me to see how my practitioner and leadership experiences could translate into relevant research publications. I chaired 20 doctoral advisees to completion and helped another 60 doctoral students finish their degrees. AHRD contributed greatly to these students' development and I enjoy seeing many of them at our annual conferences.”

 

Since that first conference experience, Toby has presented/co-presented more than 70 times at AHRD conferences, as well as served as Managing Editor of the 2001 AHRD Proceedings, then as editor/co-editor of three volumes between 2002 and 2004. He also co-founded the AHRD-sponsored Emerging Research course (following Gary McLean, Darlene Russ-Eft, Cathy Sleezer, and Dick Swanson's efforts to get it started less formally in prior years). His commitment to the course is evident in his continued contributions over the last 12 years--coordinating, facilitating, co-teaching and providing student presentation feedback. Toby noted, "The research course was the most fun and most rewarding part of my experience with AHRD!” In addition to his work with the conference, Toby has published more than 20 articles in AHRD journals, served as an AHRD Board member and AHRD Vice-President for Research, and was honored with the outstanding Early Career Scholar Award.

 

When asked about a memorable AHRD experience, Toby recounted, "After working as a full-time HRD consultant for about ten years, my wife (a former non-profit executive) and I left successful careers and began working as tenure-track professors while in our mid-thirties. I was surprised that my department expected new professors to take on at least 20 advisees and serve on even more doctoral committees. For some reason, my senior faculty decided to create a doctoral student machine! But, instead of focusing on the 'lemons' of that situation, I used my executive and career coaching skills and helped my very diverse group of graduate advisees to find their individual paths to research HRD-related career success. The 'lemonade' was the energy and creativity that came from these bright exciting adults--from whom I also learned a lot. So, my most memorable moments were when each of these students came to AHRD conferences to present their ideas and research and when they are successful publishing their work. I was also delighted that so many advisees received 'dissertation of the year' and 'best paper/article' honors from AHRD and related organizations.”

Toby is currently reading A Hologram for the King, a novel by Dave Eggers about modern day adventures in Saudi Arabia, but is also spending time this summer continuing his commitment to read something related to Jungian Psychology. He just started in on Jung's The Red Book.

    Final Thoughts

    AHRD is celebrating its 21st annual conference in 2014 in Houston, Texas, from Thursday, February 20 to Saturday, February 22. Registration for the conference will open in early November, 2013, but keep in mind that the manuscript submission deadline is September 9.
