Critical HRD

Description of Track: This track provides a space in the Academy for the interrogation of dominant theory and practice, and creation of alternative understandings and practices that promote diversity, change, pluralism, and equality across societies and cultures. Of concern to this track is asymmetrical power relations and how they influence HRD and life in organizations and society including (but not limited to):

  • Gender and sexism

  • Race and racism

  • Class and classism/caste and caste system

  • Sexuality/gender identity and heterosexism

  • Physical Ability

  • Religion and Spirituality

  • Nationality

  • Ethnicity

  • Position within organization hierarchy

  • Age

  • Language

  • Social responsibility and justice in international settings or social responsibility and justice across cultures

  • Other marginalized groups

This track supports and promotes research and practice that creates structural change within organizations and societies and challenges power relations for the purpose of promoting pluralism, empowerment, and equity in societies. The track welcomes papers and abstracts from scholars and scholar practitioners interested in critical and social justice perspectives.

Laura L. Bierema is professor, University of Georgia, College of Education, Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy, Programs in Adult Education and Human Resource & Organization Development. Prior to coming to UGA, Dr. Bierema was assistant professor in the School of Labor and Industrial Relations at Michigan State University where she also worked in faculty development in the College of Human Medicine. Before her career in academia, Dr. Bierema held a variety of human resources management positions in the automotive industry with AlliedSignal, Inc (now Honeywell). Dr. Bierema’s research interests include workplace learning, career development, women’s development, organization development, and critical human resource development. Dr. Bierema holds both bachelors and masters degrees from Michigan State University and a doctoral degree in adult education from the University of Georgia. Her articles have appeared in both research and professional publications including Human Resource Development Quarterly, Human Resource Development Review, Adult Education Quarterly, Human Resource Development International, International Journal for Lifelong Education, Organization Development Journal, International Journal of Training & Development, Journal of European Industrial Training, Adult Learning, Performance Improvement Quarterly, Performance Improvement, Training & Development, NASSP Bulletin, Innovative Higher Education, and McGraw-Hill Team and Performance Sourcebooks. She is the editor of Women’s Career Development across the Lifespan: Insights and Strategies for Women, Organizations, and Adult Educators, co-author of Philosophy and Practice of Organizational Learning, Performance and Change, co-editor of Critical Issues in Human Resource Development, and author of the forthcoming Implementing a Critical Approach to Organization Development. Dr. Bierema is a Cyril O. Houle Scholar in Adult and Continuing Education, and Lilly Fellow. She is also the 1998 recipient of the Richard A. Swanson Excellence in Research Award, and five of the Academy of Human Resource Development’s "Cutting Edge” Awards, for one of the 10 best papers presented at the annual conference.
