Did you know that nearly 30% of HRD Members reside in Texas and Louisiana which have just been (and continue to be) hit so hard by Hurricane Harvey? AHRD members are affiliated with at least nine universities and many more organizations in the region. I know what a close-knit community we are in AHRD, so I know members from the United States and internationally join me in sending our wishes for improved conditions as soon as possible and for courage and strength to those who must rebuild after this catastrophic storm.
AHRD Members, please consider how you might show your support for AHRD members being affected by Hurricane Harvey. The New York Times and Forbes have both published great lists of verified organizations that can put your donations of support to good use. Or, you may just want to reach out to an AHRD member you know and ask the simple question “how can I help?”. I know more than a few of our AHRD colleagues are actively volunteering in the affected areas and can readily identify so many things that are needed from communities like ours. Reminder, too, that you can connect with AHRD members via AHRD’s facebook page. The need for support will persist long after this initial week, so let’s all do what we can!
One way that AHRD can help in this moment is to extend the deadline for submissions for the 2018 AHRD International Conference in the Americas. Submissions were set to be due by this Sunday, September 3. However, with 30%+ of our members affected by the hurricane, we absolutely want to do what we can to support those who wish to submit papers/proposals to be able to do so.
Thus, we are officially extending the deadline for all submissions (including pre-conference proposals) to Friday, September 15 (11:59 PST). Refer to the Call for Submissions or Call for Pre-Conference Proposals for submission details.
Of course, those of you who are not affected by the hurricane are invited and encouraged to submit earlier than this deadline. Doing so will help to alleviate the extra strain we’re putting on the conference team, Track Chairs, and literally hundreds of volunteers that are involved in the review process. Thank to those conference leaders for your support to make this extension happen!
If you have been directly affected by the hurricane and find that you cannot make that September 15 deadline, we will work with you to ensure that your scholarship is a part of the 2018 conference. Simply contact Robert Yawson, Program Chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org should you need to make arrangement for a submission later than September 15. We’re celebrating AHRD’s 25th anniversary and the conference would not be all that it is without the presence and contribution of our Texas and Louisiana members!
To those in Harvey’s path, if there is anything that AHRD can do to support you, please let me or any of our Board Members know. We hold you in our thoughts during this extraordinarily challenging time!
