As the VP of Membership, I am excited to meet with our members at our 20th Conference in the Americas to engage around topics that so many of us are passionate. I always enter and leave the conference feeling inspired about new ideas, stretched in my own perspectives, and so grateful to have time with researchers and practitioners that are on the cutting edge of "leading the field through research". On my agenda? Attending numerous symposia, some Food-N-Thought sessions, an Innovative session (or two), meeting new members and attendees at our Opening Reception, hanging with those uber-cool scholar-practitioners, visiting with our SIGs and having those great conversations in hallways, nooks, and in between events. This is the way I stay immersed in the conference, and I urge you to consider how you can get the most--meaningful conversations, new ideas, new connections, new opportunities--as you gear up for the 2013 Conference. I hope you will join me in both celebrating and honoring our 20 years of being THE Academy of HRD.

President-Elect Ron Jacobs wishes to extend a special invitation to attend the conference keynote speech by Tony Carnevale on Saturday morning. Professor Carnevale is currently Director and Research Professor of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. Many AHRD members will remember Dr. Carnevale when he served as director of research at the American Society for Training and Development, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dr. Carnevale's books from his early research, published by Jossey-Bass, were among the first data-based publications to identify the skills gap in the US and to call for additional public and privately-funded training efforts to help address this important societal issue. Dr. Carnevale remains an important voice on current and future training issues in the US. We hope you will make a special effort to attend his keynote presentation.
Shani Carter, VP of Membership and SIGs has been busy making sure the Special Interest Groups are taking a central role in the 2013 conference. The SIG’s have been very active all year, and are looking forward to an exciting conference. The SIG leaders will participate in a lunch meeting with their board liaisons (Shani Carter and Holly Hutchins) on Thursday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Also, the SIG’s will hold their annual membership meetings on Saturday morning from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. Currently, AHRD has 12 SIG’s and each SIG has been assigned a room for its meeting. In addition, several SIG’s have proposed Pre-conferences, Innovative Sessions, and Food-N-Thought sessions. Please see the full conference program for details.
So much information can be gathered and shared using social media platforms during the 2013 conference. Attendees can leave and receive comments about particular speakers or sessions, share what they think about the event, post pictures, quickly find other attendees and, of course, share the best places to eat (and drink!).
